Profanity filter for Hulu on Apple TV

Hulu's profiles decide what your household can open. They can't do anything about a single line once it's playing. CleanCut adds exactly that: the same Hulu app, on the same subscription, with the language muted.

What changes

Hulu on its own, and with CleanCut

Hulu on its own

Hulu has Kids profiles, which limit the catalog to content rated for children, and a PIN for switching out of them. That is a gate on the whole title. A PG-13 film with one strong word plays in full or not at all.

With CleanCut

  • Profanity muted, or skipped past, line by line as it plays
  • Your own word list: switch off words you don't mind, and changes apply mid-episode
  • Works on the ad-supported plan; Mic Sync on Pro re-aligns the filter after a break if it drifts
  • Covers the Hulu library the older filtering services never could
  • Same Hulu app, same subscription, same remote. Nothing cast, nothing re-encoded, nothing installed on the TV.

Covered in Hulu

  • Hulu's on-demand catalog: films, series, and Hulu originals
  • Content on the ad-supported plan, with Mic Sync to re-align after a break if needed
  • Both muting and skipping profanity, line by line, on your word list

Not covered

  • Live channels on Hulu + Live TV. Live broadcasts have no subtitle file to work from.
  • Violence or nudity. CleanCut reads dialogue, not the picture.

Setting it up

  1. Install CleanCut on the iPhone or iPad you keep near the TV, on the same Wi-Fi as the Apple TV.
  2. Open it, pick your Apple TV, and type in the code that appears on the television. Once.
  3. Choose whether profanity is muted or skipped, and switch off any words you don’t mind hearing. Changes apply mid-episode.
  4. Press play in Hulu. Nothing to configure in Hulu. Pair CleanCut with the Apple TV once and press play in Hulu as usual.

Filtering Hulu is part of CleanCut Plus and Pro. YouTube and Plex are free, so you can try the filter on either before paying for anything. Pricing has the details.

Questions about Hulu

Why can CleanCut filter Hulu when VidAngel can't?

VidAngel plays the film through its own service, which requires the studio's permission. Its agreements with Disney, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. following its 2020 settlement mean it does not filter their content, and Disney owns Hulu. CleanCut never touches the stream: it mutes the TV at the right moments while Hulu plays exactly as it would anyway, so no permission is involved.

Does it work with Hulu's ad-supported plan?

Yes. Ad breaks can nudge the timing, since the subtitle file is timed to the show and not the ads. Mic Sync on Pro corrects that automatically; on any plan you can slide the filter earlier or later by hand.

Does it filter Hulu + Live TV channels?

No. Live programming has no script and no subtitle file, so there is nothing to filter ahead of time. Hulu's on-demand catalog is covered; its live channels are not.
